Glassnode Review: Strong On-Chain Data, but Is the $49 Advanced Plan Worth It for Retail?

Glassnode's Advanced plan costs $49 a month for 300+ metrics at daily resolution and four years of history, with no API. We checked what a retail investor really gets, and what the free-tier claims online leave out.

The verdict

Glassnode is the reference name for on-chain market indicators, and the data behind it is deep. For retail use the picture is narrower. The pricing page we checked lists no free plan, the $49 Advanced tier is capped at daily resolution, four years of history and no API, and the most useful extras start at Professional. A good fit for people who already chart on-chain cycles weekly, a poor fit for casual holders.

Best for Long-term Bitcoin and Ethereum investors who chart on-chain cycles weekly

Pros

  • Deep catalogue: about 270 on-chain and 40 market metrics even on Advanced
  • Documentation, a metric catalog and a changelog are public and detailed
  • Professional adds up to 15+ years of history and 10-minute resolution
  • Point-in-time metrics on Professional suit honest backtesting

Cons

  • Pricing page lists no free plan, despite older guides describing one
  • Advanced is daily data only, with four years of history and no API
  • Professional is quote-based and API credits are a separate add-on
  • Indicators describe the market's state, not what to buy or sell

Most crypto charts tell you what a price did. Glassnode tries to tell you what the holders behind it were doing: how many coins sat unmoved for a year, whether the average buyer is in profit, how much was sent to exchanges last week. That is a useful question for anyone holding for years, and Glassnode is the name people reach for first.

The harder question is whether a retail investor gets enough of it without paying professional money. Our answer is: only if you will actually open it every week.

What the $49 plan really gives you

We looked at the plan page rather than trusting older guides. It lists two paid plans, Advanced and Professional. Advanced is $49 a month as shown, and it is built for "personal charting and research".

In numbers, that means 300+ metrics, split into roughly 40 market metrics and 270 on-chain ones. History runs four years. Resolution is daily. API access is not included.

Four years is the detail to weigh. Bitcoin's cycle is about four years long, so the Advanced window shows you roughly one full swing and little else. If your plan is to compare today's MVRV or realized-profit readings with 2018 or 2021, you will not see them on this tier. Professional extends history to 15+ years and resolution to 10 minutes, but it is priced by configuration, and the page shows an entry price for a related Vector product of $749 a month.

The free tier question

Several 2026 reviews describe a free "Standard" tier with Tier 1 metrics and one alert. We could not find a free plan on the current pricing page, and its FAQ describes only the two paid plans. Our reading: any free access that survives is a teaser, not a plan you can rely on. If you find one in your account, treat it as a bonus. Do not budget around it.

What the data is good for

The metrics are strongest on a few big, slow questions. Realized cap and MVRV compare market value to what coins last moved at. SOPR shows whether coins being spent are in profit. Entity-adjusted metrics try to merge addresses that belong to one owner, which cleans up the noise from exchange shuffling.

Studio is where this lives, and it is a charting tool first: pick a metric, overlay price, save the view.

Used this way, the data is reliable for context. It is not a signal generator. Glassnode itself describes its Market Compass score, a 0 to 100 daily read from Risk-Off to Risk-On, as a map of where the market stands, "not what to buy or sell". We agree, and we would add that every on-chain indicator has had long stretches of looking wrong. Nothing here predicts a price.

Where retail users hit the wall

Three limits show up fast.

  1. No API on Advanced. You can view charts and export, but automating anything needs Professional plus a credit add-on. Credits are charged per call: 1 for Bitcoin, 2 for any altcoin.

  2. Daily resolution. Fine for a long-term holder. Useless for timing a trade inside a day.

  3. Altcoin depth. The best metrics are for Bitcoin and Ethereum. For smaller coins, the catalogue thins out and the benefit shrinks.

The documentation is a quiet strength. It covers rate limits, data credits, a metric catalog and a changelog, plus a CLI, an MCP server for AI tools, an Excel add-in and data sharing to Snowflake and BigQuery. Those integrations point at professional users, though, not at someone with a $49 budget.

Who should pay, and who should not

Pay for Advanced if you already follow cycle indicators, you hold Bitcoin or Ethereum for years, and you will check charts at least weekly. Then $49 a month (about $588 a year if paid monthly) buys a clean, well-documented source, and you can cancel when the cycle goes quiet.

Skip it if you buy a little each month and rarely look at charts. The free weekly commentary Glassnode publishes, plus free tiers from Coin Metrics and CoinGecko, will cover most of what you need. Skip it too if you want to backtest: four years of daily data is not a backtest.

Professional users are a different market. Teams and funds will value the history, the point-in-time metrics (which never get revised, so tests are honest) and the API. We did not price a Professional plan, so we cannot say if the quote is fair.

Verdict

Glassnode earns its reputation for data quality and documentation. It loses points because the entry plan is thin for its price, the free route seems to have closed, and the best parts sit behind a quote. A 7.1: good, narrow, and easy to overpay for. This is research, not financial advice.
