PancakeSwap Review: The Default DEX on BNB Chain, Less Compelling Everywhere Else

PancakeSwap is a strong home for BNB Chain swaps and liquidity, with fees from 0.01% to 1% and 11 chains. We weigh that against scam-token risk, retired veCAKE staking and a weaker case on Solana.

The verdict

PancakeSwap is still the best decentralized exchange for people whose money lives on BNB Chain: low network fees, pool fees from 0.01% to 1%, and deep liquidity for BNB-ecosystem tokens. It now reaches 11 chains, but on Ethereum Uniswap has the edge and on Solana Raydium and others are stronger. It needs no ID and offers no support desk, so scam tokens and approvals are your risk.

Best for BNB Chain users who swap and farm with their own wallet

Pros

  • Lower network fees on BNB Chain, with pool fees from 0.01% to 1%
  • Reaches 11 chains including Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum and Solana
  • Farms, liquidity pools and Syrup Pools in one interface
  • Audit reports are published, with a bug bounty of up to $1 million

Cons

  • Scam tokens and malicious approvals are a constant risk with no support desk
  • Impermanent loss can leave liquidity providers behind simple holders
  • Ethereum and Solana volume sits mostly with Uniswap and Raydium
  • No ID is required, which also means no regulatory protection for users

PancakeSwap won its place on BNB Chain years ago by being cheap and obvious, and it has spent the time since trying to be more than that. The honest question for a reader today is narrower: if your coins are on BNB Chain, is this still the place to swap and farm, and does the expansion to other chains give anyone a reason to leave Uniswap or Raydium? For BNB Chain, yes. For the rest, mostly no.

Why BNB Chain users keep coming back

A decentralized exchange has no account, no custody and no support line. You connect a wallet, sign transactions and pay fees to the pool and to the network. On BNB Chain the network part is small, and that is the core of PancakeSwap's appeal.

Pool fees depend on the version. Per CryptoSlate's review, v2 swaps cost 0.25%, and v3 pools charge 0.01%, 0.05%, 0.25% or 1% depending on the pair. Newer Infinity pools use dynamic fees and can add charges from custom hooks. Of the standard 0.25%, a split reported by CryptoVantage sends 0.17% to liquidity providers, 0.03% to the treasury and 0.05% to CAKE buyback and burn.

Stable pairs in the lowest v3 tier cost a hundredth of a percent per swap. That is hard to beat on a centralized exchange once you include spreads, though you still pay gas and absorb price impact.

Eleven chains, with a clear home

PancakeSwap's documentation lists 11 chains: BNB Chain, Ethereum, Solana, Base, Arbitrum, Aptos, ZKsync, Linea, Monad, Robinhood Chain and opBNB. That breadth is new, and it is why the question of other chains arises at all.

The docs overview lists swap, cross-chain swap, limit and TWAP orders, and perpetual trading under Trade.

Our view is that the breadth is a convenience, not a lead. CryptoSlate's verdict is that PancakeSwap is best for BNB Chain traders and should be avoided if your trading is mostly on Solana. On Ethereum, Uniswap has the larger user base and the most liquidity, as we show in our Uniswap review. Cross-chain routes can also apply slippage twice.

If you are on Solana, look at Phantom as a wallet and at Solana-native venues for swaps. Use PancakeSwap on other chains when it quotes a better price than the alternatives, and check the quote each time.

Farms, CAKE and what changed

The earning side is a large part of the product. Liquidity pools pay trading fees, yield farms pay CAKE to people staking LP tokens, and Syrup Pools hand out partner tokens for CAKE staked. Coin Bureau also lists CAKE.PAD for token launches, plus prediction and lottery products.

CAKE has a hard cap of 450 million tokens, reduced from 750 million, and a design aimed at about 4% yearly deflation through burns funded by fees, according to Coin Bureau. Read that as a design goal, not a promise about price, and we make no forecast about the token.

One recent change affects holders. The older locked CAKE and veCAKE staking has been retired, and the app now shows a redemption page for previously locked positions.

If you held locked CAKE, this is the screen to use. If you did not, it is a reminder that DeFi rules change and a position you open today may be reshaped by a vote.

The risks that no interface fixes

PancakeSwap's own marketing does not dwell on these, and we will.

Scam tokens. Anyone can list a token on a DEX. Fake contracts and malicious approvals are the main way users lose money. Verify contract addresses and revoke approvals you no longer need.

Impermanent loss. A liquidity position can finish behind simply holding the two coins when prices trend. Fee income may not compensate.

MEV. Sandwich attacks can worsen the price on large swaps. Set a tight slippage limit.

No safety net. There is no ID check, so nobody can reverse a bad transaction. The 2021 DNS hijack redirected users to a phishing page, though the contracts were not touched.

The project publishes audits for v3, MasterChef and Infinity, with a bug bounty of up to $1 million through Immunefi. Audits reduce risk, and they do not remove it.

Who should use it

Use PancakeSwap if you hold BNB or BNB Chain tokens, can manage your own wallet security and want low fees and farms. Start small and learn the approval screen before you add size.

Use something else if you want regulated protections, a support desk or cash-out to a bank. Our Coinbase review covers that side. The perpetuals product is also unavailable in the US, UK, Canada and several other countries.

CryptoSlate rates PancakeSwap 7.9 out of 10 and Coin Bureau gives 4.6 out of 5. We land at 7.7, held back by the risks above and a weaker multi-chain case. This is not financial advice, and nothing here predicts any token's price.
